AMI is a global, not-for-profit organisation established by Maria Montessori in 1929 to maintain the integrity of her life's work, and to ensure that it would protect, develop, and extend her legacy. The organisation further supports and encourages quality expressions of Montessori principles in pursuit of social, educational, and humanitarian aims in countries throughout the world. Montessori is one of the most widely implemented educational approaches in the world with over 25,000 schools in more than 140 countries. The Montessori movement, however, is far broader and works to assist children, families, and adults in a variety of settings. Association Montessori Internationale is an umbrella organisation, with a worldwide network. The head office based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, with a team that consists of 16 staff members and an additional 5 staff members working remotely. 

To manage the finances for the Association Montessori Internationale AMI seeks a hands-on financial controller. The role provides an opportunity for an ambitious, technically strong, and outgoing individual to become the go to person for financial and many operational matters for the Executive Director and staff throughout the organisation. The role will require someone who is hands-on but also analytical and able to work effectively with non-financial staff both within and outside the organisation. As financial Controller you are a team member of the Support Team. Applicants should have a permit to work in the Netherlands and live in the Amsterdam region.

Responsibilities 
Trusted financial support

  • Provide trusted financial and operational support to staff throughout the organisation and to partner and donor organisations.
  • Improve financial processes and information flows.

Statutory Accounts

  • Produce the annual statutory accounts 
  • Manage external audits.

Financial control

  • Management of the accounting system 
  • Monitoring of cashflows and currencies 
  • Develop and document business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls
  • Ensure Balance Sheet control accounts are reconciled on a regular basis 
  • Year-end close processes

Budget preparation and management for the Group

  • Prepare the budget and reforecasts of income, costs, cash flow
  • Help budget-holders understand particular elements of their expenditure
  • Working as part of a cross functional team prepare budgets for grants 

Management Accounts and grant reporting

  • Production of monthly reports from Finance System 
  • Work with staff to understand income and receipts
  • Investigate key finance issues and implement corrective action
  • Produce management accounts for the Board including: year to date performance; income and expenditure forecasts; narrative
  • Maintain an overview of performance against budget, in particular for restricted grants
  • Reports to donors 

Other 

  • Supervise the Finance Administrator
  • Look for cost reduction opportunities
  • Review payments and payroll prior to authorisation by the ED
  • Ensure any regulatory returns are submitted in a timely fashion

Key Qualities


  • Relevant accounting qualifications
  • Experience in producing budgets, management accounts and forecasts for presentation to non-financial staff
  • Experience of the financial management of restricted grants and working across multiple currencies
  • Experience of producing year-end accounts and of working with auditors 
  • Knowledge and experience of financial processes and controls
  • Staff supervisory experience
  • Fluency in English speaking and writing (Cambridge level C1 B grade or equivalent)
  • Preferably speaks the Dutch language
  • Preferably have Dutch GAAP and/or IRFS knowledge

This position is open to applicants on a 5 day basis working from AMI head office at the Koninginneweg161 in Amsterdam for 3 days a week and 2 days from home.
