Drøbak Marine Utility Garden

Thursday 9th July 2026

We are delighted to share that AMI and Drøbak Montessori School in Norway were featured in UNESCO's recently published Recommendations Paper: How can youth be meaningfully involved in the Greening Education Partnership? (see page 9). Students from Drøbak Montessori School, from 7th to 9th grade, built and now maintain a functioning marine garden in the Oslofjord, growing sugar kelp and blue mussels to help restore a degraded ecosystem.

The project takes place during school hours and integrates ecology, engineering, biology, and civic engagement, without separating learning into subject-based silos. Students have also raised funds and presented at international conferences, and redesigned their buoys after a winter storm destroyed them.
