Montessori Experts Advocate for Inclusive Classroom Design
During a lecture at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) on March 11, 2025, Montessori for Kenya experts emphasized the importance of designing inclusive classrooms that accommodate all learners, including those with disabilities. Dr Victoria Marwa Heilman and Steve Lawrence, both Montessori architects, advocated for learning spaces that are accessible, sustainable, and supportive of holistic development.
Key points discussed included mobility-friendly layouts, integrated washrooms and kitchens, and the use of indigenous materials. The event also showcased the collaborative efforts of JKUAT architecture students and the Montessori movement, with the top proposals set to be featured on the Montessori website. This collaboration not only highlighted the vital role of inclusive design in education but also demonstrated the strength of collective efforts in promoting inclusive education.
