Vale Maria Shizuko Matsumoto
In Loving Memory of Maria Shizuko Matsumoto (7 June 1925 – 22 April 2026)
Maria Shizuko Matsumoto was born in Hokkaido, Japan, on 7 June 1925. After an early career as an elementary school and kindergarten teacher, she traveled to Perugia, Italy in 1970 to study Montessori Education under Antonietta Paolini, where she earned her AMI 3-6 Diploma.
Her commitment to Montessori education led her to Rome in 1973, where she received her AMI 0-3 Diploma under the guidance of Silvana Quattrocchi Montanaro as well as Gabriele Bartoli of Armando Diaz di Roma and Sofia Cavalletti. In 1974 she further expanded her expertise by obtaining the 6-12 Diploma from Camillo Grazzini in Bergamo.
After completing an internship under Estela Palmieri in Los Angeles in 1975, Maria returned to Japan to establish the Montessori Institute of Tokyo.
As the Director of Training for over four decades, she mentored more than 2,000 students across Japan and internationally until 2018, after which she was appointed Director Emeritus.
In 2024, she celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Montessori Institute of Tokyo, surrounded by fellow Montessorians and graduates from around the world. On March 8, 2026, she attended her final graduation ceremony for the 51st cohort, where she delivered her speech.
Maria passed away peacefully on 22 April 2026 at the age of 100. Her profound legacy and devotion to the Montessori movement in Japan will continue to inspire generations to come.
