Statement: 2019 International Day of Families

Sunday 19th May 2019

To celebrate the 2019 International Day of Families. AMI co-drafted a statement with some NGO/UNESCO partners. It highlights the paramount importance of families as the first and most significant unit where children learn values of respect for oneself and others, solidarity, integrity.  It was shared with UNESCO and government delegations.

Montessori discovered that the child's character develops through lived experiences, rather than by listening to adults' words. The child also helps adults ( parents, teachers, community) develop their maturity  and wisdom. The young child stimulates adults' love, deeper respect and understanding of life-favouring principles.

The complete statements in French and English can be downloaded from this website.

The Montessori community can participate by sharing the text widely and translating it into additional languages, including indigenous languages. Versions in local languages will facilitate outreach to parents and families.

The signatory NGOs represent organisations promoting families, parents, mothers, women, young children, working globally to promote non-violence and peace through education. They include Association Montessori Internationale (AMI), together Make Mothers Matter, World Education for the Education of Young Children, Business and Professional Women, International Council of Catholic Education.
