De Moraes Monção, Vinícius. “Educação infantil no movimento internacional da educação nova: as perspectivas Maria Montessori e Nursery Schools na revista The New Era (1920—1939).” Momento - Diálogos Em Educação, 34(3), 35–58. https://doi.org/10.63595/momento.v34i3.19677
This article explores how early childhood education was discussed within the international New Education movement by analysing The New Era journal between 1920 and 1939. It focuses especially on the UK context, where two approaches stand out in the journal: Montessori education and the Nursery School movement. In the 1920s, Montessori pedagogy appears frequently, supported and promoted by an international network of educators, many connected to Maria Montessori and to Theosophical groups. From the late 1920s into the 1930s, the journal shows a shift, with increasing attention given to Nursery Schools, reflecting social and political changes in England, including the rise of the Labour movement and growing concerns with mitigating social inequalities affecting working class families and children.
A key contribution of the article lies in its methodological approach. Using digital tools to analyse a large body of material, the author maps the networks of people, institutions, and ideas involved in these discussions. This reveals how educational approaches gained visibility through relationships, collaborations, and broader social contexts. The study highlights the transnational nature of these exchanges, showing how ideas circulated across countries and were shaped by different actors—many of them women. Overall, the article offers new ways to understand the history of education, not as isolated developments, but as the result of dynamic networks and ongoing exchanges.
